President Donald Trump announced Saturday he is raising new global tariffs to 15 percent from 10 percent, effective immediately. This move follows a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that found Trump had overstepped his authority by invoking emergency powers to impose earlier levies last spring.
Trump criticized the Supreme Court decision as "ridiculous, poorly written, and extraordinarily anti-American." He asserted his new tariffs are based on a "thorough, detailed and complete review" and accused trade partners of exploiting the U.S. for decades.
The new 150-day tariff is set to begin Tuesday. This action comes as the Trump administration develops alternative processes for imposing tariffs, a key element of his economic agenda.
The White House stated the new tariff will not apply to goods compliant with the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). Additionally, industry-specific tariffs on steel, aluminum, automobiles, and lumber remain unaffected.
