SINGAPORE: A 45-year-old woman is suing Prudential Assurance Company Singapore for denying a S$100,000 payout for brain aneurysm surgery she underwent in 2023. Ms. Cai Yunhong claims the insurer used a 'buried clause' to exclude coverage for endovascular repair, a modern, minimally invasive procedure.

She purchased a critical illness policy from Prudential through Standard Chartered Bank in 2016, believing it offered broad coverage. However, she alleges the policy only covers open-skull surgery, which she did not undergo. Prudential denies the claim, stating the contract clearly excludes endovascular procedures.

The trial, which began on March 18, centers on whether Prudential misled her during the sales process. Ms. Cai seeks full payment of her claim, plus refunds and waived premiums. Prudential argues the policy terms were clear and that her allegations are unfounded.
