Alberta has broadened the eligibility criteria for its disabled parking placard system to include residents with severe vision loss.
The provincial government stated the policy change acknowledges that accessibility needs extend beyond physical mobility challenges. Officials say the move is designed to foster greater independence for visually impaired Albertans.
Eligibility is strictly limited to individuals whose vision loss legally prevents them from operating a motor vehicle. Applicants must secure medical approval from a healthcare professional before a placard can be issued.
Alberta follows British Columbia and Saskatchewan, which have previously modernized their regulations to include visual impairments.
