David Tsao, Co-Founder and CTO of the $4 billion biotech firm BillionToOne, details a healthcare revolution. One in eleven babies born in the US this year is screened by a genetic test that didn't exist a decade ago.

BillionToOne's core innovation is a DNA molecular counting platform. For prenatal testing, the company adds synthetic DNA to patient samples to drastically improve accuracy in detecting rare fetal DNA, enabling screening for conditions like sickle cell disease.

The same technology is now poised to transform oncology. Tsao states the company is less than a year away from launching an ultra-sensitive MRD test for early-stage cancer patients, a potential breakthrough for treatment outcomes.

Scaling is critical. BillionToOne's facility has the potential to process nearly 2 million tests annually. To meet this demand, the company has integrated AI and computer vision to streamline lab workflows, tackling operational bottlenecks.

The journey wasn't easy. Two months after launch, only one physician was using their test. A strategic sales push, including rapid hiring and direct patient engagement, was key to overcoming early adoption hurdles.
