Shira, a 43-year-old non-smoker and avid runner, received a shocking diagnosis of stage 1 lung cancer despite having no symptoms. She underwent a full-body MRI at her husband's urging during a family trip to New York City. The MRI revealed a small mass in her right lung, initially dismissed as a minor finding.

Friends and family, including several doctors, urged her to follow up with a CT scan. The CT scan showed the mass had grown to 4.1 cm, confirming fast-growing adenocarcinoma. Shira underwent surgery to remove half of her lung, and the cancer had not spread to her lymph nodes.

Five weeks post-surgery, she was running again. Six months later, scans confirmed she was cancer-free. Shira now advocates for early lung cancer screening through her foundation, Cancer Doesn’t Care, noting that current guidelines-which only recommend screening for smokers over 50-are outdated.
