Austrian police have confirmed the presence of rat poison in a baby food jar, prompting a significant recall. The Germany-based HiPP brand announced the recall of its "carrot with potato" puree at SPAR supermarkets in Austria due to suspected tampering.
Police seized jars in Austria, as well as the Czech Republic and Slovakia, as part of ongoing investigations. A product sample tested positive for the poison. Food safety officials are investigating an alleged extortion scheme as a possible motive.
Customers are advised not to consume the affected product, identified by a white label with a red circle on the bottom of the jar, and to return it to the point of purchase.
