A third cancer patient has died following a serious medication error at the University Hospital of Burgos, a public hospital in northern Spain. The patient had been in critical condition for several months after receiving an overdose.
The incident occurred last December when five patients undergoing cancer treatment received significantly higher doses of medication than prescribed due to an incorrect drug concentration during preparation.
Two of the five patients died shortly after the treatment. The third patient, who had been in intensive care, also passed away. The remaining two patients have since recovered and been discharged.
Spanish authorities have launched a judicial investigation into the matter, considering potential charges of serious professional negligence.
The hospital acknowledged the error as human and has since revised its internal protocols to enhance medication safety procedures.
