Canada captain Alphonso Davies says he's happy to be back with his national teammates, even as he continues to rehab a hamstring injury that kept him out of training camp.
The 25-year-old Bayern Munich left back watched from the sideline as Canada beat Uzbekistan 2-0 in a pre-World Cup friendly in Edmonton on Monday. He did light running on the pitch to test the injured hamstring.
“It feels nice to get back on the pitch and do some running. I’m happy to be home and I’m happy to be with the boys and support them,” Davies said after the match.
Head coach Jesse Marsch said Davies is continuing the rehab program set by Bayern and will be evaluated daily. Neither club nor country wants to rush him back.
“Obviously when the games get started, he’s going to want to play,” Marsch said. “But what we don’t want to do is put him in a situation to suffer again and be vulnerable again.”
Davies has 58 senior caps, 15 goals and 17 assists. His biggest moment came in November 2022 when he scored Canada’s first-ever World Cup goal against Croatia.
Injuries, including a torn ACL, have kept him off the field since March 2025. Canada opens the World Cup in Toronto against Bosnia-Herzegovina on June 12.
Asked if he’ll be ready, Davies said, “I can’t really say right now. Obviously I can say yes or no, but it all depends on how the rehab goes. We just have to see how everything goes over the next couple of days.”
Marsch said Davies is providing motivation for the squad: “What it’s going to be is a progression of a few minutes in the first game. We want to give him a chance to be a big player in this tournament for us.”
