Afghanistan has sacked Twenty20 captain Rashid Khan following the team's group-stage exit from the recent 20-overs World Cup. The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) announced the decision Thursday.

While under Rashid's leadership, Afghanistan reached the semi-finals of the 2024 edition, the team failed to advance to the Super-Eights stage this year. Opener Ibrahim Zadran will now captain the squad for the upcoming three-match T20 series against Sri Lanka, commencing March 13 in Sharjah.

The ACB cited strategic vision and recent management changes, including a new head coach, as reasons for the leadership transition. The board also acknowledged security concerns regarding the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka in Dubai, following Iranian missile strikes in the UAE. Discussions are ongoing with stakeholders regarding the series' feasibility.
