Bosnia manager Sergej Barbarez has announced his World Cup squad, blending experience and youth with veteran striker Edin Dzeko and uncapped midfielder Ermin Mahmic.
Dzeko, 40, is Bosnia's most capped player and all-time top scorer. He is one of two survivors from the country's only previous World Cup appearance in 2014, alongside defender Sead Kolasinac.
Bosnia qualified for the tournament by defeating Wales and Italy on penalties in the playoffs. Dzeko suffered a shoulder injury in the final against Italy but has since returned to action for Schalke 04.
In Group B, Bosnia will face co-hosts Canada, Qatar, and Switzerland.
Barbarez called up Mahmic after FIFA approved the 21-year-old Austrian-born player's request to switch allegiance. Mahmic has represented Austria at youth levels and also played for Bosnia's Under-19 team.
"You can't believe how happy and proud he is to be with us," Barbarez told reporters. "He plays in the position of eight and 10, he has depth, the profile of a player that we don't have much."
Eighteen-year-old winger Kerim Alajbegovic is the youngest in the squad. He assisted Dzeko's equalizer and scored the winning penalty against Wales, then converted another penalty in the win over Italy.
Bosnia will play warm-up matches against North Macedonia on May 29 in Sarajevo and Panama in St. Louis before opening their World Cup campaign against Canada on June 12 in Toronto.
