The Championship playoff clash between Middlesbrough and Southampton has been overshadowed by a 'spygate' scandal. Middlesbrough manager Kim Hellberg has accused their opponents of cheating after Southampton was charged by the English Football League (EFL) for allegedly filming Boro's training session without permission.
"It's quite clear that someone has made a decision to cheat," Hellberg said after the 0-0 draw at the Riverside Stadium. The EFL charge cites a rule barring clubs from observing another team's training within 72 hours of a match.
Southampton manager Tonda Eckert refused to answer questions, walking out of his post-match press conference. The club says it will cooperate with the EFL investigation.
On the pitch, Middlesbrough dominated with 21 goal attempts to Southampton's six, but neither side could break the deadlock. Tommy Conway hit the post for Boro, while Taylor Harwood-Bellis's header struck the crossbar for the visitors.
The second leg is set for Tuesday, with the winners facing Hull City or Millwall in the playoff final at Wembley on May 23.
