Texas Tech board chairman Cody Campbell engaged in public dispute with Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark over scheduling a Red Raiders football game for Friday night instead of Saturday.
Campbell argued Friday Night Lights in Texas is sacred territory reserved for high school football, opposing the move of Texas Tech's September 19th game against Houston.
Yormark responded that Campbell does not run the Big 12, explaining the conference's board approved moving 12 games annually off Saturdays to increase viewership. Friday night games outperformed average ratings by 64% in 2025.
The dispute reflects broader tensions over television scheduling and traditional fan expectations. Campbell, a former offensive lineman who co-founded Texas Tech's NIL collective, continues pushing back against the conference decision.
Campbell maintains the timing change comes too late and won't benefit the team, which faces Oregon State on September 12th before the moved game.
