Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White and star guard Caitlin Clark are pushing back against the narrative surrounding their recent sideline confrontation.
White addressed the incident Monday, standing firm in her coaching style. She suggested the reaction would be different in men's sports, saying, "I don't often think it becomes an issue if you're watching it in men's sports, most of the time."
The exchange occurred during Indiana's 100-84 loss to the Portland Fire. Clark struggled through one of her roughest performances this season. White portrayed it as two competitive personalities pushing each other.
Clark dismissed the idea of deeper issues, telling reporters, "First of all, two people being competitive. Two people that really want to win." She also took responsibility for the team's struggles: "I'm the point guard, so it's on me to help this team and this franchise win."
Clark gave a strong defense of White, saying, "I ride for Steph. I ride for these girls. Nobody thought twice about it." She recalled a moment last season when she "bawled in Steph's arms" after an injury.
Hall of Famer Cheryl Miller called the visible tension "frustration" boiling over during a difficult stretch.
