Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has expressed optimism about the team's defensive turnaround following a disastrous 2025 season. The unit ranked 30th in total defense, allowing 59 touchdowns-only surpassed by the Cincinnati Bengals.

Jones highlighted major offseason moves, including the trade for pass rusher Rashan Gary and signings of defensive end Otito Ogbonnia, safeties P.J. Locke and Jalen Thompson, and cornerback Cobie Durant. Outside linebacker Tyrus Wheat also returned for a second stint.

The Cowboys missed the playoffs with a 7-9-1 record under first-year coach Brian Schottenheimer. Despite flashes of promise, Jones acknowledged that defensive struggles derailed playoff hopes. "Had we played a lick of defense last year, we would’ve had ourselves a real playoff run," he said.

Quarterback Dak Prescott started all 17 games in 2025 after recovering from injury. Key wins over the Chiefs, Eagles, Giants, and a tie against the Packers provided glimpses of potential.
