FIFA has firmly rejected claims that it exaggerated attendance figures for the Group A match between South Korea and the Czech Republic in Guadalajara. Despite a reported turnout of 44,985 at the 46,000-seat Estadio Akron, broadcast imagery showed numerous vacant seats, sparking immediate skepticism.
The governing body clarified that official metrics reflect tickets scanned and spectators within the stadium footprint, not real-time visual occupancy. FIFA stated that many ticketed fans remained on concourses rather than occupying their assigned seats during play.
This dispute arises amidst broader criticism regarding ticket pricing and demand for the expanded 48-team World Cup format. Organizers released photographic evidence depicting a largely filled venue to counter narratives of poor attendance.
