FIFA has rejected Iran’s request to move its 2026 World Cup group-stage matches from the United States to Mexico. The decision ends speculation about venue adjustments.
Iran is scheduled to play New Zealand on June 16 in Inglewood, California; Belgium on June 21, also in Inglewood; and Egypt on June 26 in Seattle. The 2026 tournament runs June 11-July 19 across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
Iran’s ambassador to Mexico, Abolfazl Pasandideh, had urged FIFA to relocate the matches, calling it the "best situation" for the team. FIFA responded that it maintains regular contact with all participating associations - including Iran - and affirmed the official match schedule announced December 6, 2025.
U.S. President Donald Trump previously stated Iran’s team was “welcome” but questioned its appropriateness amid Middle East tensions. FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirmed Trump reiterated Iran’s welcome during recent White House talks.
Iran’s national team reaffirmed its intent to compete, demanding safety assurances from FIFA and U.S. authorities.
