The Atlanta Falcons will release quarterback Kirk Cousins once the new league year begins next month. General Manager Ian Cunningham informed Cousins of the decision, citing respect for his career and providing clarity for his free agency.
Cousins joined the Falcons two years ago on a four-year, $180 million contract with $100 million guaranteed. The team's subsequent drafting of Michael Penix Jr. with the eighth overall pick in that year's draft signaled a shift in strategy.
Cousins' first season was challenging, leading to Penix taking over as starter earlier than anticipated. When Penix sustained a torn ACL this season, Cousins played in 10 games, starting eight. Over 24 games with the Falcons, Cousins recorded 28 touchdowns, 21 interceptions, and 5,229 passing yards with a 65.0 completion percentage.
