Former NFL defensive back Ronyell Whitaker, who played for the Minnesota Vikings for two seasons, has died. His family confirmed the news on Sunday. Whitaker was 46.

The statement from Whitaker's family noted his passion, perseverance, and purpose. He was a standout player for Virginia Tech before joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2003 as an undrafted free agent. Whitaker played 27 games for the Vikings from 2006, recording 31 tackles, a fumble recovery, and a pass break-up.

After his NFL career, Whitaker also played in NFL Europe and was on the roster for the Canadian Football League’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He later served as a defensive backs coach at Chanhassen High School and owned a company specializing in relocation transactions.

His family described him as having a generous heart, unwavering loyalty, and a deep love for his family, calling him a protector, mentor, and a source of strength and laughter.
