Kylian Mbappe converted a 70th-minute penalty to give France a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Paraguay in Philadelphia, sending Les Bleus into the World Cup quarter-finals.
The goal, Mbappe's seventh of the tournament, broke the deadlock in a match defined by extreme heat and a stubborn Paraguayan defense.
Paraguay, who had eliminated Germany in the previous round, frustrated France for large stretches. The breakthrough came after substitute Desire Doue was brought down in the box by Diego Gomez. Following a VAR review, referee Ilgiz Tantashev awarded the penalty.
France will face Morocco in Foxborough on Thursday in a rematch of the 2022 World Cup semi-final.
Earlier, Morocco advanced with a clinical 3-0 win over Canada in Houston. Azzedine Ounahi scored twice before Soufiane Rahimi added a late third, making Morocco the first African nation to reach back-to-back World Cup quarter-finals.
