FIFA announced Friday that spectators at World Cup matches in the United States and Canada can bring one factory-sealed disposable water bottle, up to 20 ounces, into stadiums. The ruling reverses earlier plans that allowed empty reusable bottles.
The restriction, based on safety concerns, prohibits hard-sided and reusable bottles entirely, as FIFA Chief Operating Officer Heimo Schirgi cited the risk of bottles being thrown as a primary reason for the policy.
To address hydration concerns, especially at venues where forecasted temperatures exceed 25 degrees Celsius, FIFA will implement heat-mitigation measures including hydration stations, misting areas, and cooling tents. Water prices inside stadiums will match those at other events held in the same venues.
The 2026 World Cup kicks off Thursday, June 11, at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, where Mexico will face South Africa.
