FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced Thursday he will seek a fourth term, aiming to lead the global soccer governing body through the 2027-2031 cycle.

The declaration came during the FIFA Congress in Vancouver, just two months before the World Cup kicks off. Infantino, 56, took office in 2016 and has been re-elected unopposed twice.

His tenure has seen major tournament expansions, including this year's 48-team World Cup and a 32-team Women's World Cup. However, criticism has mounted over record high ticket prices and the controversial decision to award the FIFA Peace Prize to President Donald Trump.

South America's football body CONMEBOL has already pledged its unanimous support for his re-election bid.
