Royal Challengers Bengaluru's opening bowlers, Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, demonstrated on Monday how elite bowling, aided by pitch conditions, can re-establish the bat-ball equilibrium in the current Indian Premier League (IPL) season.
The IPL has recently favored batters, with flat pitches and small boundaries leading to exceptionally high scores and frequent chases of over 200 runs. The 'impact player' rule has also drawn criticism for further unbalancing the competition.
Despite Delhi Capitals posting a season-high 264-2 on Saturday, followed by Punjab Kings' record chase, a livelier surface at the Arun Jaitley Stadium saw Hazlewood and Kumar combine for seven wickets, dismissing Delhi for 75. The duo's disciplined line and length produced significant swing, a stark departure from the usual powerplay aggression.
"I think the swing was normal, and the good thing was we got early wickets and that's why it kept us in the driving seat," stated Bengaluru captain Rajat Patidar, acknowledging the bowlers' effectiveness. Delhi captain Axar Patel credited the bowlers, noting, "They swing the ball and have done it at every ground."
