MUNICH, Germany - Bayern Munich could hand 16-year-old goalkeeper Leonard Prescott a Champions League debut against Atalanta if starter Jonas Urbig fails to recover from a concussion, coach Vincent Kompany said Tuesday.
Prescott, a Germany youth international, trains with the club’s Under-19 squad and received special permission to work evening shifts as a minor. He is the only available option behind Urbig, who sustained the injury during Bayern’s 6-1 win in Italy last week.
"Jonas trained normally today. The decision will be medical," Kompany said. "If fit, he plays. If not, we have full confidence in Leonard."
Bayern lacks first-choice keeper Manuel Neuer, still rehabbing, and third-stringer Sven Ulreich, now out with an adductor issue after Saturday’s 1-1 Bundesliga draw at Bayer Leverkusen.
Kompany dismissed any notion of playing cautiously despite the aggregate lead. "This is not a friendly match... it’s about performance," he said.
The winner faces either Real Madrid or Manchester City in the quarterfinals.
