Mexican legend Guillermo 'Memo' Ochoa is set to rewrite history. The 40-year-old goalkeeper will make a record sixth World Cup appearance for Mexico in 2026, before retiring from both club and country.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the news, which Ochoa himself reposted. Ochoa, who recently played for Cyprus's AEL Limassol, announced he will step away from the national team and professional football after the tournament.

'I'm leaving calmly,' Ochoa said. 'It is difficult, without a doubt, but in my case it will not be so difficult because I have enjoyed it for many years... your head and body say we have given everything.'

Ochoa's World Cup journey began as a backup in 2006 and 2010. He became a global star with heroic performances in 2014, 2018, and 2022. He also won a Bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

With this sixth appearance, he joins elite company alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Javier Aguirre's Mexico squad begins training May 6, with the final roster due June 1. Mexico opens the tournament against South Africa at Banorte Stadium.
