Lionel Messi has acquired Spanish fifth-tier team UE Cornella, the Catalonia-based club announced Thursday. The move is part of a strategic effort to develop local talent in the region.
"This move reinforces Messi’s close ties to Barcelona and his commitment to the development of sport and local talent in Catalonia," Cornella said in a statement. The project aims for sporting and institutional growth, strengthening foundations, and investing in talent with a long-term vision.
Messi, who previously played for Barcelona and now with Inter Miami, led the MLS club to its first Cup last year. He had been suspended for a previous Copa del Rey tie against Cornella.
