Mexico's national team coach Javier Aguirre has called up a 12-man squad comprised solely of domestic league players to commence World Cup training camp. These Liga MX selections will join eight additional league players on May 6.
This move will see key starters absent from ongoing league playoffs for clubs like Cruz Azul, America, Pumas UNAM, Guadalajara, and Toluca. The Mexican Football Federation confirmed these 12 players are under consideration for the final World Cup roster.
The tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, begins June 11. Mexico will face South Africa in Group A. Pre-tournament friendlies are scheduled against Ghana (May 22), Australia (May 30), and Serbia (June 4). The final World Cup squad announcement is set for June 1.
