Romanian football legend Mircea Lucescu has died at age 80 following a heart attack. Bucharest University Emergency Hospital confirmed his death Tuesday.
Lucescu suffered the heart attack Friday morning during training. He was hospitalized immediately.
The hospital called Lucescu "one of the most successful Romanian football coaches and players" and noted he was the first to qualify Romania's national team for a European Championship in 1984.
Lucescu stepped down as Romania's national team coach last Thursday after falling ill during training. His departure came three days after Romania missed World Cup qualification, losing to Turkey in a playoff.
As a player, Lucescu captained Romania at the 1970 World Cup. His coaching career spanned decades across Europe, winning multiple titles.
He recently returned to coach Romania after a 38-year gap, attempting to qualify for the World Cup.
