Mahendra Singh Dhoni will miss the start of the Indian Premier League season after sustaining a calf strain. The Chennai Super Kings confirmed Saturday that the 44-year-old wicketkeeper-batter is undergoing rehabilitation and is likely to be out for the first two weeks.

Dhoni, who led Chennai to five IPL titles before stepping down as captain in 2024, has played only in the IPL since retiring from international cricket in 2020. He featured in all 14 matches last season, scoring 196 runs as the team finished at the bottom of the standings.

Chennai, last year's champions in 2023, open their campaign against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on Monday. The IPL begins Saturday and runs through May 31.
