Lionel Messi has made World Cup history, becoming the first player to score in seven consecutive finals matches. The record came as Argentina defeated Jordan 3-1 in Dallas on Saturday to win Group J.
Coach Lionel Scaloni rested several starters, but goals from Giovani Lo Celso, Lautaro Martinez, and Messi secured the victory. The win sends a strong message ahead of their Round of 32 match against Cape Verde in Miami.
Argentina controlled the match early. Lo Celso scored a bending free kick in the 19th minute. Martinez then doubled the lead from the penalty spot before halftime.
Jordan's Mousa Altamari scored early in the second half to become the first team to beat Argentina's goalkeeper at this tournament. However, Messi sealed the win with a late free kick in the 80th minute.
"The boys played a good match," Scaloni said. "We're happy for them. Now the good part is coming."
