Mexico rallied from a 1-0 deficit to crush Serbia 5-1 in their final World Cup warm-up match Thursday in Toluca, gaining momentum just a week before opening the tournament on home soil.

Serbia struck first in the 19th minute when Petar Stanic capitalized on a defensive slip and deflected shot past goalkeeper Raul Rangel. But Mexico leveled in the 34th minute through defender Johan Vasquez, who headed home from Brian Gutierrez's cross.

Javier Aguirre's side took the lead deep into first-half stoppage time after a misplaced back pass from Stefan Bukinac rolled past keeper Filip Stankovic for an own goal.

Mexico extended the lead 12 minutes after halftime when Raul Jimenez scored from close range, then made it 4-1 in the 72nd minute as Adem Avdic turned Alexis Vega's corner into his own net. Luis Chavez sealed the rout with a superb long-range strike just before full time.

Fireworks lit up the Nemesio Diez stadium at the final whistle as Mexico signed off preparations ahead of next Thursday's opening match against South Africa-the first game of the tournament they are co-hosting with the United States and Canada.
