RIO DE JANEIRO - Neymar is back. Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti named the 34-year-old forward to the squad for next month's World Cup, ending a lengthy injury layoff that sidelined him through most of the qualifying campaign.

Brazil, the five-time champions, aim for a record sixth title. Ancelotti made clear the decision was based on performance, not reputation.

"We evaluated Neymar throughout the year. Recently he has been playing consistently and improved his physical condition," Ancelotti said Monday. He added that while Neymar has the same responsibilities as everyone else, his experience is a factor.

Neymar, Brazil's all-time leading scorer, last played for the national team in 2023. Injuries during his time at Al Hilal and a rocky return to Santos fueled doubts. He said Sunday he feels physically ready.

"Physically, I feel great. I've been improving with every game," he told reporters.

The squad includes Vinicius Junior, Raphinha, and Endrick. Ancelotti left out Real Madrid's Rodrygo and defender Eder Militao due to injury.

Brazil opens the tournament against Morocco on June 13 in New Jersey.
