New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill is publicly criticizing FIFA following reports that NJ Transit tickets from MetLife Stadium to New York Penn Station could exceed $100 on World Cup game days. Sherrill stated in a video message that her administration inherited an agreement where FIFA is contributing "zero" to transportation costs, leaving NJ Transit with a $48 million bill to manage an estimated 40,000 fans per game. She highlighted FIFA's reported $11 billion earnings from the World Cup and high ticket prices, asserting that New Jersey commuters should not bear the financial burden.
MetsLife Stadium is scheduled to host eight matches, including the final. Significant restrictions will be in place on game days, including a ban on parking at the stadium itself. Current fares for the route are under $13. Similar high transit pricing has been reported for other World Cup host cities.
New Jersey lawmakers have proposed a bill that could add surcharges to retail goods, food, drink, and event tickets in the Meadowlands District during the World Cup to support event preparations.
