NJ Transit has reduced the price of round-trip train tickets from New York Penn Station to MetLife Stadium for World Cup matches from $150 to $105, following widespread backlash. The transit agency cited financial support from 'sponsors and other sources' for the price cut.
The initial $150 fare sparked a public dispute between New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill and FIFA. Sherrill had demanded FIFA cover transit costs; FIFA criticized the high fares as a 'chilling effect' on the fan experience. A Sherrill spokesperson confirmed the governor directed NJ Transit to seek private funding to lower the price.
NJ Transit CEO Kris Kolluri had defended the original $150 ticket, stating the tournament would cost the agency $48 million and that commuters should not bear the burden. Parking is prohibited at MetLife Stadium, and ride-sharing is limited, making train service critical. New York Penn Station will be restricted to matchgoers four hours before games. The first World Cup match at MetLife Stadium is June 13.
