Natalie Wilkie of Salmon Arm, B.C., has captured Canada's first gold medal at the Milan Cortina Winter Paralympics, winning the women's standing para-biathlon competition. Wilkie finished the race in 33 minutes 1.8 seconds, significantly ahead of her competitors. This marks her fourth career Paralympic gold and ninth medal overall. "This is pretty unreal," Wilkie stated, expressing her elation. "The gold today is even better."
In other events, Mark Arendz of Hartsville, P.E.I., earned a silver medal in the men's para-biathlon, bringing his career total to 13 Paralympic medals. Tyler Turner of Campbell River, B.C., secured a bronze in the men's SB-LL1 snowboard cross after a review of the final standings. The Canadian team's medal count now stands at six.
In wheelchair curling, Mark Ideson's squad maintained an undefeated record, improving to 3-0. Para-alpine skier Mollie Jepsen of West Vancouver, B.C., has withdrawn from further competition due to a knee injury.
