Italian Olympic biathlete Tommaso Giacomel has undergone successful heart surgery after withdrawing mid-race due to breathing difficulties.

The Italian Winter Sports Federation confirmed an atrial conduction abnormality was identified and treated with ablation, which was "a complete success."

Giacomel is scheduled for discharge and will undergo further checks before returning to training.

He expressed disappointment online, calling it the "worst feeling" to DNF while leading an Olympic race, but vowed to continue his career.

Giacomel previously won a silver medal in the mixed relay at the Games and holds multiple World Cup victories.
