Italian snowboarder Emanuel Perathoner, whose able-bodied career ended after a severe training accident in 2021, has achieved Paralympic gold in snowboard cross. The 39-year-old athlete, who previously competed in the 2014 and 2018 Winter Olympics, suffered a fractured tibial plateau and a knee replacement that limits bending to 40 degrees. This injury sidelined him from the Beijing 2022 Games and prompted his transition to Paralympic competition.
Perathoner's victory came on home snow in Cortina, a significant moment for the athlete from South Tyrol. "My motto is: never give up, with or without a disability. And I can say this having passed from an Olympic career to a Paralympic one. Sport can do everything," he stated after the race.
Despite the increased difficulty with a restricted knee, requiring significant physical adaptations and rehabilitation, Perathoner found the will to compete again. His success highlights the transformative power of sport and personal perseverance.
