Rory McIlroy has seized a commanding six-shot lead heading into the third round of the Masters at Augusta National.
The Northern Irishman delivered another exceptional performance on Friday, reaching 12 under par with a strong back nine. Americans Sam Burns and Patrick Reed are tied for second place at six under.
McIlroy, who completed his career Grand Slam last year, is playing with renewed freedom. However, past disappointments at Augusta linger.
He will be paired with Burns on Saturday, facing a sun-baked course with potentially faster greens. Other contenders include Justin Rose, Tommy Fleetwood, and Shane Lowry.
McIlroy has the chance to join an elite group of players, including Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, and Tiger Woods, who have successfully defended their Masters titles. The tournament winner will receive $4.5 million from a $22.5 million prize purse.
