Real Madrid President Florentino Perez announced Tuesday he will not step down and has called a board election following a season without a trophy.

The 79-year-old called a press conference amid rumors Jose Mourinho might return as coach or that Perez would resign.

"I am not going to resign," Perez stated. "I invite anyone who wishes to do so. I will be standing to defend the interests of Real Madrid's members."

His appearance came two days after Barcelona sealed the LaLiga title by beating Real at Camp Nou, capping a difficult year for the club.

Real also exited the Champions League in the quarterfinals after a defeat to Bayern Munich. Off-field tensions escalated when captain Federico Valverde was hospitalized following an altercation with teammate Aurelien Tchouameni.

When asked about Mourinho, Perez declined to comment on sporting matters.

Several players, including Vinicius Jr and Kylian Mbappe, have been booed by fans. Perez acknowledged the frustration.

"I sometimes share the frustration... I'm the first to admit I'd rather win everything," he said. "However, I must remind you that, with me as president, we've won 66 titles in football and basketball."

Perez is the most decorated president in Real Madrid history, with 37 major football titles. First elected in July 2000, he was re-elected last year for a term through 2029.
