Robin van Persie has been fired as head coach of Feyenoord after just one full season, despite the club finishing second in the Eredivisie. The 42-year-old former Arsenal and Manchester United striker was dismissed with one year remaining on his contract.
The decision was announced by newly appointed technical director Devy Rigaux, who cited an internal review that pointed to a declining trend in points and a lack of development in style of play, both domestically and in Europe. Feyenoord finished 19 points behind champions PSV Eindhoven.
Van Persie had been under pressure since the arrival of Rigaux and general manager Robert Eenhoorn two weeks ago. Reports described his management style as chaotic, with frequent lineup changes and conflicts with players.
