Egypt defeated Australia 4-2 on penalties to advance to the World Cup last 16 following a 1-1 stalemate through extra time on Friday in Arlington, Texas.

Hossam Abdelmaguid converted the decisive spot-kick after Australia missed two attempts. Earlier, Emam Ashour put Egypt ahead in the 13th minute, heading home a cross from Karim Hafez for the tournament's 250th goal.

Australia leveled in the second half when Aiden O'Neill's free kick forced an own goal by Egypt's Mohamed Hany, his second of the tournament.

This marks Egypt's first-ever victory in a World Cup knockout match. The team now faces the winner of the Argentina versus Cape Verde match in the round of 16 in Atlanta on Tuesday.
