Jannik Sinner's Roland Garros campaign came to a stunning halt Thursday, as the world number one collapsed in a five-set second-round defeat to Juan Manuel Cerundolo. The loss shatters what was shaping up to be a predictable men's draw and throws the title race wide open.
Sinner led two sets to love and was up 5-1 in the third before suffering a physical collapse. He cited dizziness and low energy, saying he “hit the wall.” The Italian will now rest ahead of his Wimbledon title defense.
Cerundolo credited his mental toughness for staying in the match. His older brother Francisco also advanced on the same day.
With Sinner out and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz already sidelined by injury, Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev headline a suddenly open field.
On the women's side, top seed Aryna Sabalenka defeated French hope Elsa Jacquemot 7-5, 6-2. Defending champion Coco Gauff eased past Mayar Sherif 6-3, 6-2. Both are key contenders for the title alongside Iga Swiatek.
Naomi Osaka also moved on, beating Donna Vekic in straight sets.
