A new documentary, "Frozen in Time: The Bill Barilko Story," is in production, focusing on the life and mysterious disappearance of Toronto Maple Leafs legend Bill Barilko. The film is spearheaded by journalist Steve Paikin and author Ronnie Shuker.

Barilko, born in 1927, played for the Leafs, winning four Stanley Cups and famously scoring the game-winning goal in overtime to clinch the 1951 Cup. Just four months later, he vanished during a fishing trip. A massive search by the Royal Canadian Air Force proved fruitless, and the operation was eventually called off.

The Leafs did not win another Stanley Cup until 1962, the same year Barilko's plane wreckage and remains were discovered. The story has been kept alive through The Tragically Hip's song "Fifty Mission Cap" and various books.

Paikin, who is writing and directing the documentary, emphasized the dramatic nature of Barilko's story, noting that it holds a significant place in Canadian hockey lore. The film will feature interviews with notable Canadians and hockey figures, including Frank Mahovlich and Phil Pritchard.
