MADRID - European champions Spain will head to next month's World Cup with a roster built around eight Barcelona players, but without any representation from Real Madrid for the first time since 1950.
Manager Luis de la Fuente named a 26-man squad on Monday that features a strong Barcelona core: goalkeeper Joan Garcia, defenders Pau Cubarsi and Eric Garcia, midfielders Gavi, Pedri, and Dani Olmo, and forwards Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres.
Notable absences from Real Madrid include defender Dean Huijsen and Dani Carvajal.
De la Fuente downplayed the lack of Madrid players, saying he doesn't focus on club affiliations and that all players called up are proud to represent the national team.
Seven squad members play in the Premier League, including Arsenal's David Raya, Martin Zubimendi, and Mikel Merino, as well as Manchester City's Rodri.
The coach also addressed injury concerns surrounding Yamal and Nico Williams, both dealing with hamstring issues, saying he's confident they'll be available for the first match.
Spain enters the World Cup as reigning European champions, having won the title in Germany two years ago.
