Team USA men's hockey carried the spirit of the late Johnny Gaudreau throughout the Winter Olympics, culminating in a gold medal victory. Gaudreau's jersey was a constant presence as the Americans paid tribute to the Columbus Blue Jackets star during the Milan Cortina Games.
The U.S. secured the gold medal on Sunday, defeating Canada. Following the victory, Zach Werenski and Matthew Tkachuk carried Gaudreau’s No. 13 jersey around the ice in a final tribute. Gaudreau's parents, widow, and children were present for the celebration, with his son John Jr. celebrating his second birthday on the ice.
Players expressed the deep significance of honoring Gaudreau, who was expected to be on the Olympic team. "He was so near and dear to us," said Brady Tkachuk. "We did it for him." Head coach Mike Sullivan described Gaudreau as "one of America’s very best" and an inspiration.
"It means everything - we all know he should be here with us," added Dylan Larkin. "We love him, and I like that we continue to think about him and I wouldn’t imagine it any other way."
