US President Donald Trump has openly questioned England's tactical decisions in their World Cup semifinal loss to Argentina. Speaking alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino in New York, Trump suggested England made a critical error after taking the lead.

"I think they perhaps made a mistake when they made him a defensive player," Trump said, referring to striker Harry Kane, whom he plays golf with. "They took their best player, and they put him on defence."

England, managed by Thomas Tuchel, took a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute through winger Anthony Gordon. However, the team subsequently shifted to a defensive posture, inviting sustained pressure from Argentina.

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández equalized for Argentina in the 85th minute. Lautaro Martínez then scored the winner just seven minutes later to send Argentina to the World Cup final against Spain.

Tuchel defended his in-game substitutions and tactical changes, stating he relied on his "instinct" and "experience." The loss means England will face France in the third-place playoff match on Saturday.

The defensive shift has drawn significant criticism, with some noting Tuchel was hired to move away from such tactics. The English Football Association has expressed full support for Tuchel despite the disappointing result.
