The U.S. Open tennis venue in Queens will transform into a major soccer hub this summer, hosting one of New York City's largest free World Cup fan zones. Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center is expected to accommodate up to 10,000 fans at a time from June 11-27.

Additional fan zones are planned across Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Staten Island, with the Manhattan location at Rockefeller Center running from July 6-19. Brooklyn Bridge Park will host a fan zone from June 13 to July 19. Mamdani emphasized the decision to make these events free, stating, "The world's game should belong to the world," countering rising ticket prices that could exclude many fans.

These fan zones will feature live match screenings, food vendors, and cultural programs. Governor Kathy Hochul anticipates over one million visitors and a $3.3 billion economic impact for the region, supported by initiatives like extended bar hours and outdoor watch party permits. The state is also proposing a $5 million program for youth soccer facilities and a community grant scheme.

Security preparations are underway with coordinated efforts from police and relevant agencies to ensure a safe environment for New Yorkers to celebrate the tournament. The New York-New Jersey area is set to host eight World Cup matches, including the final on July 19.
