The Ukrainian Esports Federation (UESF) has suspended 14 Counter-Strike 2 professionals for one year for competing alongside Russian players. The ban, announced June 26th, includes some of the most prominent names in the game.
Oleksandr "s1mple" Kostyliev, widely considered one of the greatest CS2 players, earned his ban for teaming with Russian player Denis "electroNic" Sharipov under the BC.Game organization. Myroslav "zont1x" Plakhotya was also sanctioned for his affiliation with Team Spirit.
The suspensions bar the players from all UESF-sanctioned domestic events and tournaments under the federation's umbrella through June 30, 2027. International play remains unaffected.
This action follows a pattern from the UESF. The federation previously sanctioned players in 2023 for participating in mixed-nationality rosters that included Russians. The latest bans represent an updated enforcement of this long-standing policy.
s1mple has publicly stated he competes "outside of politics" and has made charitable contributions to Ukraine. However, his partnership with a Russian player placed him in direct conflict with the UESF's rules.
The ban's impact may be most severe for less established players. Being excluded from UESF-sanctioned pathways removes a critical developmental ladder for those building their careers through domestic competition and academy systems.
The repeated sanctions of zont1x, both in 2023 and now, indicate the UESF views continued affiliation with mixed-nationality organizations like Team Spirit as a deliberate policy violation.
