Victor Wembanyama's MVP candidacy is under threat following a rib contusion suffered Monday night, just as the San Antonio Spurs prepare for the NBA playoffs. The 7-foot-4 phenom has been a dominant force, leading the NBA in blocks and averaging career highs in points and rebounds.

However, Wembanyama has played in 63 games, and NBA rules require players to participate in at least 65 games to be eligible for season awards like MVP. The injury, sustained from an inadvertent elbow during a fast break against the Philadelphia 76ers, places him at risk for missing crucial remaining regular-season games.

The Spurs, already assured of no worse than second in the conference, have three home games remaining. Wembanyama's ability to play in these games will determine his award eligibility.
