George North, a celebrated figure in Welsh rugby, announced Wednesday that he will retire from professional rugby at the close of the current season. The 34-year-old winger and center, who earned 121 caps for Wales and retired from international play in 2024, has spent his last two seasons with French second-tier club Provence.
North's career highlights include appearances on the 2013 and 2017 British and Irish Lions tours. He stands as Wales' second-highest try scorer with 47 tries, trailing only Shane Williams. "For me, it's the right time," North stated in a video shared on Instagram, reflecting on a career fulfilling his "childhood dream."
His club career saw him represent Scarlets, Northampton Saints, and Ospreys before his move to France.
