Amazon has announced a strategic commitment of over €10 billion to expand its European fulfillment network. The initiative includes the creation of 25,000 new jobs across the region over the coming years. Executives unveiled this plan at the Delivering the Future event in London, positioning Europe as a primary testing ground for next-generation industrial automation.
The company emphasizes a hybrid model where technology augments rather than replaces human labor. Amazon reports that robotics integration has already generated more than 700 new job categories, including roles in engineering support, systems monitoring, and data analysis. Vice President of Operations Armin Cossmann stated that autonomous systems are designed to improve safety and ergonomics while driving hiring growth.
New technologies showcased include the next-generation Proteus robot, which utilizes natural language processing for employee interaction. Also introduced was Vulcan, a tactile robotic arm for precision inventory tasks, and STARK, an automated transfer system piloted in Barcelona. Amazon plans to deploy STARK across 15 European sites by 2027 to reduce physical strain on workers.
To support this transition, Amazon is investing $1 billion globally in its Career Choice program by 2030. This initiative provides tuition coverage for hourly employees seeking qualifications in high-demand fields like renewable energy and analytics. In the UK specifically, the company aims to double program participation and expand supported internships for neurodivergent talent.
Mariangela Marseglia, Vice President of European Stores, highlighted that workforce adaptation is central to the investment strategy. With over €60 billion invested in Europe to date, Amazon asserts that maintaining competitiveness requires parallel development of infrastructure, AI deployment, and human capital. This approach offers a blueprint for policymakers navigating the intersection of automation and employment stability.
